God provides a righteousness apart from the law which comes through faith in Jesus Christ. All people have sinned, but God justifies us freely by His grace because Christ’s death satisfied God’s justice. This justification is available to everyone and establishes the law.

Believers are not debtors to the flesh but are led by the Spirit as sons of God. Through the Spirit of adoption, we can cry “Abba, Father” as His children and joint heirs with Christ.

Those who live by the flesh focus on fleshly things, while those in the Spirit focus on spiritual things. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now lives in believers and gives life to our bodies.

We find no condemnation in Christ Jesus because the law of the Spirit has set us free. God sent His own Son to do what the law could not because of our weakness. The law’s righteous requirement is now fulfilled in those who walk according to the Spirit.

A Christian’s struggle with indwelling sin creates an inner conflict of wanting to do good but failing. This battle reveals the wretchedness of our condition under the law’s power. Victory and deliverance from this struggle come only through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The law itself is not sin; rather, it is holy, righteous, and good because it reveals our sin to us. Sin uses the good law to bring death and expose our desperate spiritual condition. The law shows us our need for a savior.
