John the Baptist, upon hearing of Jesus’ growing ministry, rejoiced like the friend of a bridegroom. He understood his own role was to decrease in importance so that Jesus, who comes from heaven and is above all, could increase.

Jesus told Nicodemus, a respected religious leader, that he must be born again to see the kingdom of God. This new birth is a spiritual work of regeneration performed by the Holy Spirit, which is received by faith.
